Chapter Twenty-Eight
It’s only two o’clock in the afternoon and I’m rubbish at afternoon drinking, but I switch my tea to a large glass of duty-free vodka with a splash of Coke. I quickly realise I need to lose my anger over the recent revelation. It was over twenty-five years ago, and I know my parents are happy, so it shouldn’t be about me as I’m a grown woman. I’m just shocked that my dad is empathising with Danny. And it’s a bit bloody different. My dad’s was a stupid one-night stand, whereas Danny has had a full-blown affair.
I don’t know what to think. I fire my laptop up and check my emails, to find that I have a message from Costas asking me if I have arrived home safely. He tells me that they have taken some more bookings and that Andreas has decided that work will start on the new swimming pool right away, as he knows some builders who could have it installed in a matter of weeks. He informs me that Adonis has many bands that are keen to take part in the music festival, but they need one or two headline acts before they can begin to advertise or raise any interest from local traders.
I send back a quick reply, as I’m suddenly inspired to actually get this thing off the ground.
I settle down to my ultimate comfort food of cheese on toast and plan to watch the soaps I missed on catch-up TV, when there is a knock at the front door. I think about ignoring it, when suddenly Danny appears at the front window, tapping at it and almost giving me a heart attack.
‘Cheese on toast,’ he says, noticing my half-eaten slice on the plate on the coffee table as he walks into the living room. ‘Bet you couldn’t get that in Greece. Not with that Greek cheese.’
‘Feta,’ I say. ‘It’s delicious. What do you want, Danny? And what were all those texts when I was on holiday?’
He’s standing with his hands in his pockets like a naughty schoolboy who is being admonished by his head teacher.
‘I’m sorry, Mandy,’ he says quietly. ‘I’ve been a complete prick. I’ve really missed you these past few weeks.’
‘You walked away,’ I say, before sitting down to eat the rest of my cheese on toast and washing it down with a large vodka. I start to feel a little light-headed.
‘I know I did,’ he says, coming to sit next to me on the couch. I notice that he looks tired and has a couple of days’ stubble on his chin. ‘Things had got a bit jaded between us, hadn’t they? But I should have spoken to you instead of looking for excitement somewhere else. I just thought you’d lost interest too. You never seemed to want to come home from work.’
Danny puts his head in his hands and his shoulders give a little shake as I realise to my horror that he is crying. We’ve been together for so long and I’ve never seen Danny cry before.
